History of Ukrainian embroidery

The first embroideries on the territory of Ukraine appeared in the time of the Scythians. Archaeological excavations confirm that male figurines found in Cherkasy, created as early as the 6th century, have in their decoration not only features of Ukrainian clothing of the 18th-19th centuries, but also elements of ancient ornamentation. The Arab traveler also talked about the same ornament in his descriptions of the Rus, which date back to the 10th century.

Embroidery is the decoration of clothes, wedding towels and elements to decorate the home: tablecloths, curtains, bedspreads, etc. The most common and most revered colors by ancient Ukrainians are red and black. They were considered magical. Red testified to the life-giving energy of the sun, love, joy of the earth. Black is by no means the color of death or mourning, as we used to think, rather the opposite: the ancestors endowed it with the magic of the life force of the native land, it personified many secret signs and appeals to the fertile soil, which ensured harvest and prosperity.

The first school of embroidery in Kyivska Rus was created in the 11th century. It was founded by Anna, sister of Volodymyr Monomakh. Here the girls mastered the art of embroidery with gold and silver.

The first daredevil who combined European clothes with embroidery was Ivan Franko, who wore a jacket over the embroidered jacket.

From ancient times to today, there are more than a hundred embroidery techniques. The most popular techniques: cross and smooth embroidery, runner, mesh, etc.

In the 70s of the 19th century, when there was a rapid development of chemistry, aniline dyes appeared, in particular, a stable black color that replaced the expensive "indigo", and both the color scheme and the embroidery technique changed radically.

In the 20th century, shirts were filled with a brocade cross. The Frenchman Henrich Brocard brought perfumery to Tsarist Russia. Along with "Krestyanskoe" soap, which cost 1 kopeck, the cross "went to the people", because fashionable French patterns, flower ornaments, the same lilies and roses were printed on the soap wrapper. All this very quickly affected the ornaments characteristic of our area. They were converted into a relatively easy-to-make cross, which, as it turned out, can be used to replace almost all patterns.

We have many omens related to embroidered clothes. Here, for example, about an embroidered shirt as a symbol of loyalty: in many Chumak songs there are theses about an "unwashed shirt" - after all, only a girl to whom a Chumak remains faithful had the right to wash it. Washing a shirt by another woman confirmed the fact of treason. During the wedding, the bride put on her future husband a shirt embroidered with her own hands over her mother's.

With the recent popularization of embroidery, Ukrainian fashionistas are finding unique solutions in decorating their clothes, guided by ethnographic works and the advice of ancient embroidery masters.
